Attn. Males: Embarrassing Chest, No more!

Over 40% of men today are affected with a condition entitled gynecomastia, which translates into the words "female breast". In this case, firm breast tissue forms causing the breasts to enlarge and can cause tenderness. This enlargement may be present on one or both sides. Most of the time the enlargement is on both sides and the amount of the enlargement can vary widely. In most severe cases, the breast size can increase to a "c" or "d" cup size.

Hard Days vs. Bright Future

This condition tends to be a significant source of embarrassment for men of all ages. They are usually reluctant to discuss their concerns and are likely to try and hide their appearance under clothing. Many avoid the beach, Jacuzzi, pool, sauna and other activities where their chest would be exposed.

Yet, once the unwanted breast tissue is removed, the confidence level of the person typically increases significantly. And the most common complaint from men who have decided to have the unwanted breast tissue removed becomes, "why didn't I do this sooner??".

What causes Gynecomastia?

This condition is usually caused by changes in the hormone levels. Gynecomastia may occur at puberty or as part of the aging process when the activity of the male sex glands begin to decrease. Gynecomastia is most common during puberty. As many as 65% of 14 year old boys have this condition and 90% of teenage boys have total regression (it completely goes away) in about 18 months to three years without any treatment.

Gynecomastia may be caused by changes in the balance of estrogen and testosterone. During puberty, there may be a temporary lag in the production of testosterone behind that of estrogen resulting in breast development. Furthermore, men who are undergoing treatment for prostate or testicular cancer, for example, may be given estrogen as part of their treatment. The majority of these men receiving estrogen will develop gynecomastia.

How is Gynecomastia treated?

Unfortunately, exercise and diet do not provide the solution for this condition since it involves the actual breast tissue. On the other hand, some surgeons have developed unique techniques to remove and sculpt unwanted breast tissue. For example, one technique involves using a surgical tool called a MICROLIPO. In this case, an incision the size of a grain of rice is made on the side of the chest, under the arm. This incision is so small that it requires no sutures and is almost invisible as it heals. The glandular tissue is removed with a liposuction technique. This is done with a special cannula strong enough to break up the breast tissue. This will also remove some of the fatty tissue that surrounds the ductal tissue. Not all surgeons are equipped to address breast reduction in men. The average cosmetic surgeon performs 3 per year. And the procedure options can vary. It is best to consult with a trained surgeon who specifically focuses in the area of breast reduction for men.

The Rewards Can Be Great!

Some surgical procedures to remove breast tissue can be performed without general anesthesia. In this case, the recovery is considered safer, easier and quicker. Patients can generally return to exercise within 1-2 days. The benefit of having the procedure on Friday and returning to work on Monday is only the beginning. New experiences like a walk on the beach, a dip in the pool, better fitting clothes, and a new life of renewed confidence can begin on that following Monday as well. So, stop procrastinating and ask a doctor today about a chance for a better tomorrow!
